The impact we have made with waterless urinals: water, cost and carbon savings over time
Water efficiency is often discussed in abstract terms, but its real value becomes clear when long-term data is applied. By looking back over our purchasing history and applying conservative, widely accepted assumptions, we can estimate the scale of water, financial and carbon savings delivered through the waterless urinals we have supplied since our earliest days.

Since 2007, Ecoprod has worked with organisations across the UK to reduce water consumption in washrooms using proven waterless technology from URIMAT. This blog sets out the impact that work has had to date, looking at both the ongoing annual savings created by our installed base and the cumulative savings achieved over nearly two decades.
Water savings at scale
Between 2007 and 2025, we supplied over 12,500 waterless urinals. A widely accepted benchmark is that each waterless urinal saves around 100,000 litres of water per year compared with a conventional flushing urinal.
Our annual water savings
Based on our full installed base, this equates to:
- 1.27 billion litres of water saved every year
To put that into context, this is equivalent to:
- The annual water use of around 8,500 UK households
- Over 500 Olympic-size swimming pools filled every year
- Enough water to supply a medium-sized town for several months
These savings recur year after year, without relying on behavioural change from building users.
Our cumulative water savings since 2007
Taking into account when urinals were installed and assuming they continue to save water from that point onwards:
- Approximately 12.2 billion litres of water saved since 2007
That is equivalent to:
- Nearly 5,000 Olympic-size swimming pools
- More than 80,000 households supplied with water for a full year
- A substantial reduction in demand on local water supply and wastewater networks
Financial savings delivered to our customers
Reducing water consumption delivers direct operational savings. Using a conservative blended average of ÂŁ4.00 per cubic metre for UK non-household water and wastewater charges:

- Around ÂŁ5.1 million saved every year
This represents a recurring reduction in operating costs across commercial, public-sector and high-traffic buildings.
Cumulative financial savings since 2007
- Approximately ÂŁ50 million saved to date
For estates teams and finance directors, this demonstrates that water efficiency is not simply an environmental initiative, but a long-term cost control measure with measurable returns.
Carbon footprint reduction
Treating, pumping and disposing of water is energy-intensive. By reducing water use, we also help our customers reduce their carbon footprint. Applying UK greenhouse gas conversion factors for combined water supply and wastewater treatment:
Annual carbon savings
- Approximately 430–460 tonnes of CO₂e avoided every year
This is equivalent to:
- Taking around 300 petrol cars off the road annually
- The carbon absorbed by more than 20,000 mature trees each year
Cumulative carbon savings since 2007
- Around 4,100–4,400 tonnes of CO₂e avoided
That is comparable to:
- The annual emissions of close to 1,000 UK homes
- Tens of millions of passenger kilometres of air travel avoided

These figures highlight why waterless urinals continue to play a role in long-term sustainability strategies. Once installed and maintained correctly, the benefits scale quietly in the background, delivering:
- Ongoing reductions in water consumption
- Predictable, long-term cost savings
- Measurable carbon reductions that support ESG and sustainability reporting
