leak detection

Accurate leak detection with minimal disruption

Background to the project

Tracer Gas UK was commissioned by Ecoprod to carry out a leak detection survey at Langdown Activity Park in the New Forest.
The site is a busy, operational outdoor activity park with underground water infrastructure, where a suspected leak had been identified but not located. Due to the nature of the site, maintaining normal operations during the investigation was essential.

Impetus for the work

The client required a reliable method to locate a suspected underground leak that could not be identified using conventional techniques.
Traditional leak detection methods would have likely involved extensive excavation, causing disruption to the park’s activities, increasing costs, and prolonging the investigation.

As a result, a more precise and non-invasive solution was needed to quickly identify the source of the issue.

Key Objectives

The primary objectives of the project were to:

  • Accurately locate the source of the leak
  • Minimise disruption to the day-to-day operation of the activity park
  • Avoid unnecessary excavation and associated costs
  • Provide clear, actionable information to enable efficient repair

Scope of Works / What Was Done

Tracer Gas UK carried out a tracer gas leak detection survey using specialist equipment and methodology.

The process included:

  • Injecting tracer gas into the affected water system
  • Allowing the gas to travel through the system and escape at the leak point
  • Using highly sensitive detection equipment to monitor gas levels at the surface
  • Mapping gas concentration readings across the site to identify the leak location

This approach is fully non-destructive and allows for precise identification without intrusive investigation works.

Findings

During the survey, tracer gas readings of approximately 1000 ppm were recorded in a specific area of the site.

These elevated readings clearly indicated the exact location of the leak, allowing the issue to be confirmed quickly and with a high degree of accuracy.

Outcome / What Was Achieved

The project successfully delivered:

  • Precise pinpointing of the leak location
  • Rapid confirmation of the fault
  • A clear and targeted repair location
  • Minimal disruption to the operational site

By eliminating the need for exploratory excavation, the client was able to significantly reduce both time and costs associated with the repair process.

Overall Result

The use of tracer gas technology enabled a fast, efficient, and highly accurate leak detection process within a live environment. The outcome ensured that repair works could be carried out quickly and effectively, with minimal impact on the site and its operations.

Key Benefits Delivered

  • Non-invasive leak detection
  • High accuracy through clear ppm readings
  • Reduced investigation and repair time
  • Lower overall project costs
  • Minimal disruption to site activities
