Why anti-scald taps are essential in commercial and public buildings

Wherever members of the public have access to handwashing facilities — from schools and hospitals to leisure centres, offices and transport hubs — it’s a legal requirement to ensure that water at the point of use cannot reach a temperature that could cause scalding.

Wherever members of the public have access to handwashing facilities — from schools and hospitals to leisure centres, offices and transport hubs — it’s a legal requirement to ensure that water at the point of use cannot reach a temperature that could cause scalding.

The safety case for thermostatic control

Hot water above 43 °C can cause serious burns in seconds, particularly for young children, older people or those with reduced sensitivity. To prevent this, regulations such as the Health and Safety Executive’s HSG274 and TMV2/TMV3 standards require the installation of thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs) to limit water temperature at outlets accessible to the public.

Traditionally, this protection has been provided either through a TMV built into the tap body or mounted beneath the basin on the incoming supply. These valves blend hot and cold water to a safe, consistent temperature — typically around 41 °C — and automatically shut off if the cold-water supply fails.

However, while TMVs are extremely effective, they also introduce a maintenance burden. HSE guidelines stipulate that each valve must be checked at least once every quarter, with more frequent testing required in high-risk environments such as healthcare and social-care settings. This means regular temperature checks, calibration and cleaning, all of which demand staff time and record-keeping.

A new approach: integrated anti-scald protection

The CONTI+ lino AS L13 pillar tap, available from Ecoprod, takes a fresh approach to this challenge. Its patented anti-scald system is provided by new water balancing technology and is built directly into the tap’s design.

This clever integration delivers reliable protection against temperature spikes caused by cold-water failure or pressure fluctuations while maintaining a consistent, comfortable outlet temperature. The tap’s maximum mixing limit of 40 °C ensures user safety without compromising hygiene.

With no TMV present, ongoing maintenance is simpler and the need for multiple individual valve checks is greatly reduced — a valuable advantage for estates and facilities teams managing large numbers of outlets.

Hygiene and sustainability built in

As with the rest of the CONTI+ range, the lino AS L13 combines safety with advanced hygiene features. Its infrared sensor enables completely touch-free operation, helping to reduce cross-contamination in busy washrooms.

The tap can also be connected to the CONTI+ CNX water-management system or controlled via the CONTI+ Service App, allowing facilities managers to automate and record key hygiene tasks such as timed sanitary rinses and thermal disinfection cycles. These functions support compliance with water-safety plans and help maintain drinking-water quality in seldom-used outlets.

With a flow rate of approximately 3.8 litres per minute, the lino AS L13 is also a water-efficient choice, contributing to sustainability targets without compromising user experience.

Designed for today’s commercial washrooms

Ecoprod supplies the lino AS L13 in both mains and battery-powered versions, making it easy to retrofit into existing installations without altering the appearance of the washroom. The design matches previous generations of CONTI+ lino taps, ensuring visual continuity across facilities.

Whether for new builds or refurbishment projects, this model offers a safe, hygienic and smart solution that helps organisations meet their legal responsibilities, reduce maintenance costs and protect building users.

Key benefits at a glance

  • Anti-scald protection up to a maximum of 40 °C
  • Built-in water balancing technology provides the performance of a TMV without being one
  • Touch-free infrared operation
  • Optional connection to CNX water-management system or Service App
  • Automated sanitary rinsing and thermal disinfection
  • Water-efficient (approx. 3.8 L/min) and durable design
  • When adding the Aguardio hygiene sensor to the tap tails of the CONTI+ AS tap further maintenance time can be saved whilst enhancing compliance demands, reducing the need to visit taps frequently as part of PPM, saving water and the need to take temperature measurements manually.

Supporting safer, smarter washrooms

Ecoprod works with organisations across all sectors to implement technologies that make washrooms safer, more hygienic and more sustainable. The CONTI+ lino AS L13 demonstrates how thoughtful design can reduce both operational risk and maintenance demand while protecting users and conserving water.
