Waterless urinals

Installing waterless urinals in a world class venue

King’s Place, a prominent multi-use building in London, recently undertook a sustainability initiative aimed at reducing water consumption across its facilities. The building, now 16 years old, had been utilizing traditional water-based urinals. In light of increased awareness around sustainability and the building’s commitment to energy and water conservation, the decision was made to switch all 62 urinals to waterless systems. This change aligns with the building’s goals to achieve BREEAM in-use certification, ISO 14001 standards and work towards a Net Zero future.

Water saving potential

One of the primary drivers for this project was the potential for significant water savings. While the initiative is still in its early stages, the initial projections indicate that the waterless urinals could save up to 5 million litres of water annually. This is a substantial reduction, particularly for a building of this size, and a positive step toward minimising the environmental impact. The tenants have provided excellent feedback on the initiative, which reinforces the building management’s decision to pursue water-saving technologies.

The waterless urinal system had been previously tested at another building under the same management. The success of that installation, including the water savings and positive tenant feedback, encouraged the team at King’s Place to follow suit.

Collaboration with Ecoprod

Ecopod provided thorough guidance throughout the installation process. The project was seamless, with the installation team completing one floor per day, minimizing disruption to the building’s occupants.

Next steps

The decision to switch to waterless urinals and sensor taps forms part of a broader sustainability strategy, which also includes energy-saving measures throughout the building. King’s Place is focused on creating an environmentally responsible facility, aligned with both their corporate goals and wider environmental priorities.

Challenges and solutions

Transitioning to waterless urinals did come with a few challenges, particularly for the cleaning teams, who had to adapt to new processes. However, with appropriate training and support, these issues were quickly resolved. The cleaning staff became proficient with the new maintenance routines, and the overall management of the urinals became smooth and efficient.

Once the initial adjustment period was over, the cleaning team’s performance improved significantly, and the benefits of the waterless urinals became clearly apparent.

What the client says about the project

Ecopod was not just focused on selling the product; they were genuinely interested in our sustainability goals. They provided valuable data and case studies, projecting the long-term water savings the building could achieve. This partnership proved essential in making the project a success.

Andy Kerr, Kings Place Facilities Manager

We are very satisfed with Ecopod’s services. The installation team were flexible to our needs, able to adjust their schedule to accommodate events and the building’s operational needs. The aftercare provided was also impressive, with any follow-up questions being answered promptly.

I would definitely recommend Ecopod for similar water-saving projects, based on the first communication, the care they took during the project, the flexibility of the installation team and the quality of the aftercare provided.
